What Are All-on-4® Implant Dentures?
All-on-4® implant-supported dentures—also called All-on-6, All-on-X, and Teeth in a Day—are designed to replace an upper and/or lower dental arch. The All-on-4® method involves surgically placing an average of 4-8 biocompatible titanium posts (dental implants) into the jawbone, which then serve as a stable, secure base for a custom denture prosthesis. Since implant dentures are secured permanently into the mouth, patients do not need to worry about many of the inconveniences associated with traditional removable dentures, such as gumline slippage or messy pastes and adhesives.
Who Is a Candidate for All-on-4® Dental Implants?
Ideal candidates for All-on-4® dental implants are in reasonably good overall health and are seeking a long-lasting solution to tooth loss. Many patients currently struggling with traditional removable dentures also benefit from making the switch to an implant-based restoration.
Some of the ways to identify if All-on-4® may be the right treatment for you include:
- If you need teeth replacement for the upper and/or lower arches due to missing, damaged, or failing teeth
- If you have an adequate amount of healthy jawbone density to support the implant posts
- If you would like to try an alternative to traditional dentures
- If you are a non-smoker or can commit to quitting smoking before and after implant placement
During an initial consultation, Dr. Tadros will carefully evaluate your tooth replacement needs and oral health with a complete exam and discussion about your goals for treatment.
What Is Involved in All-on-4® Treatment?
Prior to placing any dental implants, it is important to treat any existing gum disease or oral health concerns to minimize the risk of infection, which can lead to a higher risk of implant failure. After all other dental work is completed, Dr. Tadros will begin the All-on-4® treatment process with digital impressions to capture images of your mouth and any remaining teeth using a wand-like tool. The images are scanned and displayed on a three-dimensional (3D) virtual model so that Dr. Tadros may custom-design and 3D print your new smile out of high-quality materials.
Once the smile design is complete, a surgery is scheduled to implant the appropriate amount of titanium posts into the jawbone, usually between four to eight implants. It will then take several months for the implants to fully fuse with the jawbone—a process called osteointegration. During this time, a temporary prosthesis is worn, which will then be replaced by the custom-made denture Dr. Tadros designed for you. The final prosthesis is made of durable, high-quality materials and anchored to the implants.
